Industrial Printer & Paper Cutter Blade Sharpening

Precision Edges for the Printing Industry | Scrantongrinder.com

In the world of professional printing, precision isn’t just a goal—it’s a requirement. A dull guillotine blade can pull paper, create burrs, and ruin expensive cardstock. Scranton Grinder provides the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area with industrial-grade sharpening for all mechanical paper cutters. From small tabletop trimmers to large-scale hydraulic stack cutters, we restore the factory edge at 1020 Hemlock Street.

Equipment We Service

We provide precision grinding for a wide range of conversion and finishing blades:

  • Guillotine & Stack Cutters: Specialized sharpening for high-speed steel (HSS) and carbide-tipped blades used in Polar, Challenge, MBM, and Dahle machines.
  • Trimmer Blades: Rotary and straight-edge trimmers for clean, burr-free edges on posters and flyers.
  • Doctor Blades: Precision honing for industrial ink-metering blades to prevent smearing and ensure consistent ink thickness.
  • Slitter & Folder Knives: Maintenance for high-volume web and sheet-fed finishing equipment.

The Scranton Grinder Precision Process

Since our 2025 modernization, we have invested in the specialized equipment needed to handle the high-hardness steel found in modern print shops.

  1. Liquid-Cooled Grinding: Printing blades are made of sensitive alloys. We use continuous coolant flow to prevent overheating, which protects the blade’s temper and prevents it from becoming brittle.
  2. Angle Accuracy: Different papers require different “wedge angles.” We grind your blades to the exact manufacturer specifications (typically between 19∘ and 24∘ for paper).
  3. Micro-Honing: After grinding, we perform a manual stone-honing to remove the “wire edge,” leaving a mirror finish that glides through paper stacks.
  4. Blade Balancing: We ensure the blade is perfectly straight across its entire length, preventing uneven wear on your cutter’s motor and drive system.

Printer Blade Sharpening FAQ

How often should a paper cutter blade be sharpened? Standard steel blades should generally be sharpened every 8 to 16 hours of continuous use. If you are cutting recycled paper or heavy chipboard, you may need more frequent service to avoid “dusting” and ragged edges.

Can you sharpen carbide-tipped printing blades? Yes. Carbide is significantly harder than standard tool steel and requires specialized diamond grinding wheels. We have the equipment to handle both HSS and Carbide-tipped knives.

What are the signs of a dull printer blade? Watch for:

  • An audible “thud” or “bang” when the blade strikes the cutting stick.
  • The top sheets of a stack being slightly shorter or longer than the bottom sheets (bowing).
  • Rough, “fuzzy,” or discolored edges on the paper.

Do you offer pickup and delivery for print shops? Yes! We understand these blades are heavy and dangerous to transport. Call us at 570-344-2520 to schedule a professional pickup and delivery at your shop in the Scranton area.
