Professional Chainsaw Sharpening & Maintenance
Factory-Edge Precision for STIHL & All Major Brands | Scrantongrinder.com
Since 1921, we’ve been the “Edge Experts” of Scranton. Whether you’re running a professional STIHL MS 261 or a residential electric saw, a dull chain makes your engine work harder and your cuts crooked. At 1020 Hemlock Street, we use industrial grinders to ensure every tooth is set to the exact same height and angle, giving you a saw that “self-feeds” through wood like new.
Why Machine Sharpening Beats Hand-Filing
While hand-filing is a great field fix, it eventually leads to “uneven” teeth. Our shop service restores the geometry of the chain perfectly:
- Uniform Tooth Length: If one side of your chain is filed shorter than the other, your saw will “pull” to one side. We grind every cutter to the exact same millimeter.
- Consistent Cutting Angles: We set our grinders to the specific 30∘ or 35∘ angle required for your specific chain type (Full Chisel, Semi-Chisel, or Skip-Tooth).
- Depth Gauge (Raker) Adjustment: Most people forget the “rakers.” If these aren’t lowered as the teeth are sharpened, the saw won’t take a “bite” out of the wood. We check and adjust these on every chain.
- Burr Removal: Our process removes the microscopic “rolled edges” that happen during heavy use, especially if you’ve “rocked” the chain (hit dirt or stones).
Signs Your Chain Needs Professional Service
- Fine Dust Instead of Chips: A sharp saw produces large wood chips. If your saw is producing fine sawdust, it’s scraping the wood rather than cutting it.
- The Saw “Walks”: If you have to apply heavy pressure to get the saw to enter the wood, the edge is gone.
- Crooked Cuts: If your cuts are curving to the left or right, your tooth lengths are uneven and need a professional reset.
- Smoke: Even with proper bar oil, a dull chain creates excessive friction and heat, leading to smoke and “burning” smells.

Chainsaw Sharpening FAQ
How many times can a chainsaw chain be sharpened? Most chains can be sharpened 5 to 10 times professionally, depending on how much damage (like hitting a nail) needs to be ground out. Every tooth has a “wear mark”—once you reach that line, it’s time for a new chain from our inventory.
Do you sharpen “Carbide” or “Duro” chains? Yes. These specialized chains (like the STIHL Picco Duro) stay sharp up to 10x longer but require diamond-impregnated grinding wheels. We have the equipment to handle these high-performance chains.
Can I drop off just the chain or do I need the whole saw? You can bring just the chain loop for the fastest turnaround. However, if you’re having trouble with the saw’s performance, bring the whole unit to 1020 Hemlock St and our mechanics can check your sprocket and bar wear too.
