Planer Blade Sharpening

Professional Planer & Jointer Blade Sharpening

Industrial Precision for the Perfect Finish | Scrantongrinder.com

A dull planer blade doesn’t just work harder; it ruins your lumber with tear-outs, “snipe,” and raised grain. At Scranton Grinder, we specialize in the high-tolerance sharpening of planer and jointer knives. Located at 1020 Hemlock Street, our shop uses heavy-duty, liquid-cooled grinding systems to restore a factory-original edge without ever compromising the temper of your steel.

Why NEPA Woodworkers Trust Scranton Grinder

Sharpening a 12″ or 20″ planer blade by hand is nearly impossible to get right. We provide a level of precision that “DIY” methods can’t match:

  • Liquid-Cooled Grinding: We use a constant flow of coolant to prevent “blueing” (overheating), which softens the steel and ruins the blade’s edge retention.
  • Perfect Parallelism: Our machinery ensures that the cutting edge is perfectly parallel to the back of the knife, meaning your planer stays in alignment and cuts evenly across the entire width.
  • Matched Sets: We sharpen your knives as a set to ensure they are the exact same height and weight, preventing machine vibration and extending the life of your planer’s bearings.
  • HSS & Carbide Specialist: Whether you run High-Speed Steel (HSS) or Carbide-tipped inserts, we have the specific wheels to handle both.

Our Sharpening Process

  1. Inspection: We check for deep nicks or “dings” from hidden nails or staples.
  2. Micro-Grinding: We take light, precise passes (0.001″) to remove only as much material as necessary, maximizing the life of your blades.
  3. Honing & Deburring: After grinding, we hand-hone the edge to remove the “wire burr,” leaving a razor-sharp finish.
  4. Cleaning: Every blade is returned clean and free of resin or pitch buildup.

Planer Blade FAQ

How do I know it’s time to sharpen my planer blades? Look for the signs: your planer sounds louder than usual, you’re seeing “fuzzy” grain or tear-outs, or the wood feels like it’s being pushed through rather than cut. If you see parallel lines running the length of your board, you likely have a nick in the blade that needs to be ground out.

Can you remove deep nicks from a blade? Yes. While minor nicks are removed during a standard sharpen, deep nicks require more material to be ground away. We always strive to balance the set so your planer runs smoothly.

What is the turnaround time for sharpening? Most straight-knife sharpening is completed within 2–4 business days. We know your shop can’t stay down for long, so we prioritize getting these back to you quickly.

Should I bring the whole machine or just the blades? Please bring only the blades (removed from the cutter head). If you need help removing them or if your machine needs a full service, call us at 570-344-2520 to schedule a shop repair.
